"Norton Story"
by Bob Holiday was the first book I ever read about Norton and, at
the time, the only one advertized and available in bookstores. This
is the second, revised, edition of 1976. The first was published in
1972.
Bob Holiday was editor of "Motor Cycling" up to his
retirement and spent most of his working life on the staff of
motoring and motorcycling publications.
The book is disappointing for the readers interested in production
machines as most of its content is about racing, recounting at
length various races, and showing, in the majority of the black and
white pictures, racing scenes and machines. From todays point of
view, there are far better books on the market- in fact I do not
know if this one still is- and, from a Norton Motors history point
of view, far more comprehensive ones. The book ends in the year
1975, with the future of Norton very much open to speculation.
As a collector of Norton books I see it as part of the collection;
should I want to look up certain periods or models, I have better
books at hand.
If you can get hold of one, fine, if not, it is not a great loss.
