This book is no longer
in print- probably never was after it was first published in 1972-
and the only reason I mention it is that it is in my collection of
Norton books.
The author, Dennis Howard, once on the staff of
"Motorcycle", wrote this in the early days of Norton
books. As such, it filled a void- nothing else was available, until
Bob Holiday's "Norton Story" came out not much later.
The text is interesting if, for lack of space, nothing like a
definite Norton story, but the author shows he knows his (racing)
history. He also covers the road models, often finding interesting
details like aluminium front mudguards on Commandos (I know of no
such thing). Generally speaking, he seems happier in the earlier
days when rigid or even featherbed frames ruled.
Picture quality, paper and print are very poor by today's standarts,
but most pictures are period stuff and, was it not for the sometimes
very poor reproduction, quite interesting.
I longed for this book for several years, until Mike Jackson,
ex-owner of Andover Norton, remembered, and kindly got one for me at
an autojumble. Thank you, Mike!
If you can aquire one, buy it, it is a nice period publication. If
not, do not loose sleep over it. |
